STEAM BOILERS OPERATE UNDER PRESSURE TO PRODUCE 1,000S OF POUNDS OF STEAM PER HOUR. TO PREVENT SCALE FORMATION ON THE HEATING SURFACES, WHICH WOULD DECREASE FUEL TO STEAM EFFICIENCY, A VOLUME OF THE BOILER WATER MUST BE REMOVED ON A REGULAR BASIS.

THIS PROCESS OF REMOVING BOILER WATER FROM THE BOILER IS CALLED BLOWDOWN. REGULATIONS SPECIFY THAT FOR BLOWDOWN TO GO TO SEWER, IT MUST FIRST BE DEPRESSURIZED AND THEN COOLED TO PREVENT OVERHEATING DRAINS/SEWERS. A BLOWDOWN TANK OR BLOW-OFF VESSEL IS TYPICALLY INSTALLED BETWEEN THE BOILER AND THE DRAIN TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK AND TO MIX COOL CITY/WELL WATER WITH THE BLOWDOWN WATER TO COOL IT.

IN THE patented BHR PROCESS, USING THE ENERGY TANK™, THIS regulation IS ACCOMPLISHED AND ESSENTIALLY ALL THE THERMAL ENERGY PRESENT IN THE BOILER BLOWDOWN WATER IS RECYCLED BACK TO THE BOILER FEEDWATER SYSTEM. This REDUCes THE ENERGY REQUIRED TO HEAT MAKE-UP AND FEEDWATER UP TO BOILER OPERATING TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE.

A BLOWDOWN TANK OR BLOW-OFF VESSEL IS A 100% CAPITAL EXPENDITURE THAT IS REGULATED. THE ENERGY TANK™ is a BLOWDOWN TANK/BLOW-OFF VESSEL BUT TYPICALLY PAYS FOR ITSELF WITHIN 1 YEAR, ESPECIALLY IF A SITE IS REQUIRERING REPLACEMENT OF AN EXISTING, AGED AND CORRODED TANK.

IN THE patented BHR process, ALL BLOWDOWN LINES (BOTTOM, SURFACE SKIM, CONTINUOUS, LEVEL COLUMNS ETC.) GO TO THE FLASH CHAMBER. IN THIS SECTION, INITIAL PRESSURE REDUCTION IS ACCOMPLISHED. THE PLUME OF STEAM NORMALLY VENTED TO ATMOSPHERE IS CAPTURED INTO A LOW PRESSURE (LESS THAN 7 PSIG) STEAM SYSTEM – DEAERATOR STEAM SUPPLY OR BELOW THE WATER LINE IN AN ATMOPSHERIC TANK (CONDENSATE RECEIVER OR ATMOSPHERIC BOILER FEEDWATER TANK). THIS IS PHASE ONE OF THE ENERGY RECOVERY. In special designs, higher pressure flash steam can be realized through the addition of a dump and safety valve to the Energy Tank™.

THE REMAINING BLOWDOWN VOLUME IS RETAINED IN THE STORAGE SECTION OF THE ENERGY TANK, VIA A LOOP DRAIN PROCESS. IN THE STORAGE SECTION, A SERIES OF READILY REPLACEABLE STAINLESS STEEL COILS ALLOW COOL MAKE-UP WATER, GOING TO THE DEAERATOR OR BOILER FEEDWATER TANK, TO PICK UP THE REMAINING THERMAL ENERGY IN THE BLOWDOWN WATER. AS A RESULT, NO CITY WATER/WELL WATER is REQUIRED TO COOL THE BLOWDOWN WATER BEFORE IT GOES TO SEWER.

The net result is complete thermal energy and flash steam mass recovery from the BOILER BLOWDOWN, COOLING OF THE BLOWDOWN BEFORE IT GOES TO SEWER AND ELIMINATION OF CITY WATER COOLING TO PREVENT DRAIN/SEWER OVERHEATING.

DUE TO HOTTER MAKE-UP WATER, LESS GAS IS REQUIRED TO GET THE WATER TO BOILER TEMPERATURE AND PRESSURE, THUS LESS GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS FROM YOUR SITE.
